Why Amazing Spider-Man 212 is a Hot Comic

Amazing Spider-Man 212 is this year's winner of the Marvel Movie lottery.

The word is out. Of course the word is out! Marvel Studios leaks like a sieve.

It's hardly surprising, but appropriate given that we're mentioning leaks, that news of Hydro-Man, one of the bad guys in the second Spider-Man movie since Marvel brought the character home, is now common knowledge in the speculator market.

Early 80s back issues of ASM generally aren't worth very much. They were very popular back then, and are plentiful in the back issue market now.

Supply matters a lot less than demand -- and this book has taken off, thanks to the first appearance of Hydro-Man being in this issue. Expect a wild ride on prices for this comic book until the movie is nearly out.

Pretty much every record sale of this book has happened since the turn of the year. This book will deserve to be higher up the 100 Hot Comics list by summertime.

What to Invest In

Price compression is a serious problem for comic book investors.

What that means is, the difference between grades is compressed, as manic speculators rush to buy whatever they can get their hands on without really doing their homework.

Buy-it-now items on eBay are a great way for this compression to occur. A buyer sees the item on offer, wants it and pulls the trigger. This is the only explanation for the very close sale prices in different grades since the movie leak got out there.

You don't want to be the numbskull paying more for an 9.0 than a 9.4 and only $15 less than a 9.6. This is exactly the kind of problem caused when a book gets suddenly hot, and unskilled, uninformed buyers rush to snap up copies.

Find yourself a CGC 9.8 with white pages. My prediction is that 9.8s will trade for four figures by the time the movie hits.

But take 100 percent profit if that comes along before. Don't be greedy and left holding pumpkins after Halloween.
