1980 Low Distribution Whitman Bagged Comics Price Guide
There are relatively few 'rare' comic books from the 1980s, but the Whitman issues distributed in plastic bags must qualify.
Collectors have long identified these as among the most difficult of issues to track down. There are few copies of each certified by CGC, and high-grade copies are really tough.
By 1980, Whitman was in financial trouble, and there were often delays in production which led to reduced readership, lower sales, and further cashflow problems.
As the name suggests, Whitman bagged comics were sent out to stores in plastic bags.
Circulating the books in bags meant they were often mishandled, and most copies on the market are spine stressed or otherwise damaged.
We did our best to report record sales and minimum values with what little data is available.
These books are often overlooked as junk when they do sell, especially when bundled into lots, and can go for ludicrously low prices as a result.
It's worth checking eBay for them.

Why Do Prices Vary So Much?
Some of the Whitman bagged comics are much harder to locate. Black Hole #4 is among the toughest, although there are now 54 copies in the CGC census.
The record seller is Uncle Scrooge #179, even though 88 have been certified.
The price difference between different Whitman bagged comics can partly be explained by the popularity of the characters. There are far more collectors of Uncle Scrooge than of Chip 'n' Dale, for example.
