Modern Age Top 100 Most Valuable Comic Books
We give record sales and minimum values.
Below are the most expensive comic books published since 1992.
Amazing Spider-Man #667
Gabriele Dell'Otto variant
Record sale: $33,600
Minimum value: $2,500
Read our price guide to the most valuable comic books of Variant Comics
The legendary variant of Amazing Spider-Man #667 is a relatively rare comic book, especially by modern age standards.
There are 48 in the census, including 18 in CGC 9.8 and 17 in CGC 9.6.
The scarcity, along with the huge demand for both modern variants and Amazing Spider-Man comic books, drives the prices of this book up.
They are seldom offered, and when they do change hands, prices are unpredictable. The most recent sale was $37,200, significantly lower than the record set in 2022.
This might be Coronavirus price fluctuations. Time will tell.
Here are the most recent sales in different grades:
The Walking Dead #1 (October 2003):
First Issue
Record sale: $20,000 (CGC 9.9);
$2,700 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $180

What's happened to prices of Walking Dead #1?
Prices of this comic book continue to fall, as the series has run its course. Rumor of a movie don't seem to help.
Whoever paid $20K for the 9.9 is going to with they had not.
A year ago, 9.8s were selling for over $2,000. Two years ago nearly $3,000. There is only one way this book has to go... Down.
Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014):
Gwen Stacy Becomes Spider-Woman
Retailer Incentive Cover
Record sale: $6,000
Minimum value: $180
Another Spider-Woman comic book has become red-hot. This popular variant cover has taken off and sets new records regularly.
With 454 in the census -- half of them CGC 9.8 and a single 9.9 -- this is not a rare comic book, and I suspect the future price for this issue will fall once the movie hype is over.
Marvel Collectible Classics:
Spider-Man #1 (reprints Amazing Spider-Man #300 with chromium cover)
Record sale: $13,500 (CGC 9.9);
$1,000 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $60
Value of Amazing Spider-Man Comics
You sometimes see this listed as Amazing Spider-Man #300 Chromium edition.
It's actually a 1998 reprint of the 1988 classic cover by Todd McFarlane, with shiny foil front and back cover images.
#2 is also lower down this list.
Spawn #1 (1992)
Regular Edition
Record sale: $5,750 (CGC 9.9);
$375 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $20
Here's where things get really silly.
Millions of copies of Spawn #1 were printed. There are 6 copies in the CGC census graded 10.0. SIX!
A further 66 are graded 9.9! (And seven more Signature Series 9.9s.)
That's ridiculous. 9.9s and 10.0s are really rare, and this book has over 70 copies (so far) in those top tier grades.
Nearly 6,000 are graded 9.8, and another 2,300 Signature Series 9.8s.
Some deluded, unwise soul paid almost $5K for a 9.9. That's not even the highest grade assigned to this book. Remember, there are six copies graded 10.0!
Yes. Spawn is more popular now than ever. Several Spawn books appear on the Top 100 Most Valuable Comic Books of the Modern Age.
But be smart. A 9.9 of Spawn #1 is nothing special.
Do your research. Don't put $5K into a 1992 book where there are another 70+ copies in that grade. There are better things to do with money than burn it. This should not be one of the most valuable comic books of this era.
Elseworlds 80-Page Giant #1
(1999): Rare One-Shot
Record sale: $4,870 (CGC 10.0);
$720 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $80
Again, the huge 10.0 sale distorts this book's place on the list, but as 9.8s are selling for over $700, it justifies its place here.
Spawn #185 (2008):
Sketch Cover
Record sale: $3,800
Minimum value: $30
Another Spawn cover claims a top spot.
With only 19 copies of this book in the census, you have to see why it's worth so much money. No telling of course how many more raw copies there are in the wild.
Amazing Spider-Man #678 (2012):
Mary-Jane as Venom variant
Record sale: $6,800
Minimum value: $50
A huge trend in the comic book collecting world is female Spider-Man variations.
MJ as Venom? A slam-dunk no-brainer.
Wolverine #1 (2010):
J. Scott Campbell Deadpool
Variant Cover
Record sale: $6,500
Minimum value: $100
Deadpool. Wolverine. J. Scott Campbell. Need I say more?
Danger Girl #2 (1998):
Ruby Red Smoking Gun
variant cover
Record sale: $5,400
Minimum value: $40
There are just 30 copies of this most valuable comic books in the CGC census.
Imagine if it featured Venom, a female Spider-Man, or Deadpool? It would surely be higher up the list.
I believe it's "only" valuable because it's rare, and variant collectors want to own a copy no matter what the cost.
Danger Girl is not a title that strikes me as long-lasting.
Sentai #2
Record Sale: $6,000
Minimum Value: $100
Batman #608 (2002): Retailer appreciation variant cover
Record sale: $5,500
Minimum value: $10
Read our Batman Comic Book Guide
This is a very early modern variant cover, and deserves its place on the most valuable comic books of the modern age list.
What would follow would become commonplace. A retailer special thank-you comic for ordering a certain number of copies of the regular edition.
There are 227 of this issue in the census. So it's not really rare at all. But completists will want one, along with variant collectors.
Siege #3 (2010): J. Scott Campbell Variant
Deadpool cover
Record sale: $4,960
Minimum value: $40
Read our Deadpool Comics price guide
Another popular Deadpool comic variant by Campbell.
Captain Marvel #14 (2013)
Variant Edition. 1st Cameo of
Kamala Kahn as Ms. Marvel
Record sale: $3,000
Minimum value: $150
When Captain Marvel was a thing, before THAT movie... This was one of the hottest books on the planet.
It's still popular, and Kamala isn't going away anytime soon.
Captain Marvel #17 (2013)
2nd Printing. 1st Kamala Kahn as
Ms. Marvel
Record sale: $2,900
Minimum value: $20
Another "first" appearance. Confusingly three issues later than the previous one.
Again, prices have been higher in the past -- now coming back down to earth thanks to the movie being old news. Will this still be on the most valuable comic books list next year?
Spawn #1 (1992):
Manufacturing Error; black ink missing
Record sale: $5,100
Minimum value: $20
Significantly rarer than a 9.9 or 10.0, the manufacturing error is given a green label by CGC for some reason.
CGC needs to get its act together about things like this. For example, Fantastic Four #110 exists with a green printing error. It's labeled as such on a universal label.
Why is Spawn #1 qualified, while FF #110 is universal?
If there was any justice, then this book would be worth much more than a boring 9.9 of the regular edition. I know which I would rather own.
Batman Adventures #12 (1993)
1st Appearance of Harley Quinn
Record sale: $3,450
Minimum value: $180
This book has been on a rollercoaster ride for years.
First, it rocketed to almost $3K on the news that Harley would be in a movie. Then the typical post-movie crash followed. Now it's rising again.
Most recent sale is a shade over $2,000.
It's a much scarcer book than other keys from the period, with under 6,000 universal copies in the census.
Walking Dead #100 (2012)
1st Appearance of Negan
Record sale: $3,000 (CGC 10.0);
$20 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $1
Another book which has only one way to go. The record was set by a one-off fluke 10.0.
Saga #1 (2012):
Retailer Incentive variant
Record sale: $4,000
Minimum value: $50
This book has been higher on the most valuable comic books list in the past. A Saga movie or series would rocket this into the stratosphere again.
The Maxx Ashcan (1993):
Mini comics produced in
very low numbers
Record sale: $2,100
Minimum value: $45
The 1990s implosion period saw a bunch of weird, long-forgotten titles come and go.
The Maxx is one such title. These ashcan editions have been very hot in the past, but I can't see that trend returning.
Nobody cares.
Some. of the sales data has been removed from the census. I considered deleting this book altogether, but for this year it will stay, pending more research.
Chew #1 (October 2003):
First Issue
Record sale: $2,000 (CGC 10.0);
$450 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $40
The spin-off from Walking Dead has enjoyed a period of hot speculation.
Since then, it's calmed down. Chew has long been mooted as a series or movie subject, but no dice so far.
The fluke 10.0 set the record.
X-23 v3 #1 (2010)
Dell'Otto Variant Cover
Record sale: $3,000
Minimum value: $30
Wolverine's daughter and a Dell'Otto variant. Say no more!
Marvel Collectible Classics: Spider-Man #2 (1998)
"Chromium" Edition of Spider-Man #1 from 1990 by Todd McFarlane
Record sale: $2,250 (CGC 9.9);
$1,000 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $250
This book has recently taken off, after years languishing behind #1 (see #4 on this list).
It reprints Spider-Man #1 from 1990, the classic Todd McFarlane cover.
Walking Dead #27 (2006)
1st Appearance of the Governor
Record sale: $1,800 (CGC 9.9);
$225 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $50
The huge disparity between "mint" 9.8s and the uber-rare 9.9s and 10.0s is shown here again with this crazy sale.
Not one of the most valuable comic books on merit.
Vengeance of Bane Special (1993)
1st Appearance of Bane
Record sale: $5,750 (CGC 9.9);
$350 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $40
Bane was the antagonist in The Dark Knight Rises, and a fine movie it was too.
I can't see this record being beaten, as the character is unlikely to star in another movie, which is the prime motivator to drive the most valuable comic books higher.
Invincible #1 (2003)
1st Invincible / Mark Grayson; One of the most valuable comic books published by Image Comics
Record sale: $6,200
Minimum value: $30
The Grayson clan continues to thrive in the DCU, and the price of this book has rocketed lately. Is a movie imminent?
What If? v2 #105 (1998)
1st Appearance Spider-Girl (May Parker)
Record sale: $1,390
Minimum value: $60
Female Spider characters are huge this year. The offspring of Peter Parker is a no-brainer for a movie appearance.
This sale may be a one-off, but there is support for the book around $500.
Perhaps somebody got too excited and pulled the trigger on an over-priced buy it now instead of doing their due diligence. Oops.
Some readers have expressed annoyance at variant covers appearing on this list.
We also have agonized about whether CGC 9.9 or CGC 10.0 sales should "count".
On balance, we feel that anything goes is the safest way to proceed.
In the future, we may revise that stance and keep variant covers out of this top 100 most valuable comic books.
Publishers are creating a market by allowing variant covers to exist, and there is obvious demand for them among collectors and/or speculators.
No list of the most valuable comic books of the modern age is really complete without Saga #1 retailer incentive, or Batman #608 incentive, or Mary-Jane Watson as Venom.
The list is more interesting as a result, and so our editorial decision is final.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #5 (2000): Recalled Edition
Record sale: $1,259
Minimum value: $10
A fake ad for a Marvel Douche led to lawyers worrying about potential lawsuits, so DC had to recall the first print run.
Some survived, of course. There are 112 in the census, so far...
Spider-Gwen #1 (2015)
Adam Hughes Variant Cover
Record sale: $1,500
Minimum value: $20
More Spider girls to satisfy the fan boys and a slam-dunk most valuable comic book.. More of this please, Marvel!

Scarce Send-Away Nabisco Promotional Variant cover
Record sale: $1,700
Minimum value: $50
Another mail-away promotion, this time by Nabisco.
One of the most sought-after Wolverine comics, though some of the froth has come off the market prices for this issue.
Iron Man #281 (1992):
First brief appearance,
War Machine
Record sale: $1,450 (CGC 10.0);
$90 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $10
Learn the value of Iron Man comic books
Another unrepeatable 10.0 sale. It's not even the hotter of the two first appearance issues.
Strangers in Paradise #1 (1993)
Rare; 1st Comic by Terry Moore
Record sale: $1,300
Minimum value: $80
A scarce comic book that deserves its place here on the most valuable comic books list in CGC 9.8.
Deadpool #1 (1993)
1st Solo Series
Record sale: $1,250 (CGC 9.9);
$100 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $20
Super-common book which has a few fluke 9.9s out there. Nothing special.
Goon #1 (1999)
First full appearance of Zombie Priest, Joey the Ball, Franky and Goon
Record sale: $28,800
Minimum value: $100
Compared to other books on this most valuable comic books of the Modern Age list, this is a tough book to find.
Just 223 universal copies are in the census ensure this will be one of the most valuable comic books of the Modern Age for a long time to come.
Y the Last Man (2002)
1st Issue of Series
Record sale: $1,250
Minimum value: $100
A TV series has long been mooted, and if it happens then this will look cheap right now.
Recent sales are all upwards.
Walking Dead #35 (2007)
Error Variant; Recalled
Record sale: $1,400
Minimum value: $10
The story was incorrectly printed with the same page included twice.
Another Walking Dead comic that will plummet in value.
Alias #1 (2001)
1st Appearance of Jessica Jones
Record sale: $1,100 (CGC 9.9);
$110 (CGC 9.8)
Minimum value: $30
Alias 1 on the 100 Hot Comics List
This is a very popular series, which has probably had its day in the sun.
Another 9.9 pop that sets an unrealistic bar for a book that struggles to make $100 in 9.8.
Walking Dead #2 (2003)
2nd Issue; Scarcer Than #1
Record sale: $1,500
Minimum value: $170
A much lower print run saw this sell for high prices in CGC 9.8.
Unfortunately it's going to fall in price along with the other books in the series, and will drop out of the most valuable comic books list in time.
Ultimate Fallout #4
1st Miles Morales
Record Sale: $30,900
Minimum Value: $50
Star of Into The Spider-Verse and sure to appear in more great movies, this book is on fire right now. Hold on tight, it's not done yet!
Malibu Sun #13 (1992)
1st Promotional Appearance of Spawn
Record sale: $4,000

First print run sold out; based on TV series on Adult Swim channel
Record sale: $2,200
Minimum value: $70
Another of those unlikely-to-be-successful animation shows which turns into a smash hit.
There are variant covers galore on this series. It would be a fun challenge to put the entire run together including the variants.

See our Uncanny X-Men comics price guide for more info.
Hellboy: The Fury #3 (2011)
Retailer Incentive variant
Record sale: $920
Minimum value: $100
Hellboy has become a popular character. It's always held a niche appeal, but now prices are rising on key issues and variants. One to watch.
Cyberfrog #1 (Hall of Heroes, 1994)
1st independent Ethan van Skyver book
Record Sale: $900
Minimum Value: $20
Hall of Heroes is an independent publisher which used crowdfunding websites to launch the Cyberfrog character.

Miss America (America Chavez, Utopian Parallel) 1st Appearance
Record Sale: $1,950
Minimum Value: $70
It seems that superhero TV and movie spikes are far from over, as this relatively obscure 2011 issue shows.
Expect to see higher prices for this book in the next 12 months and a higher place on the most valuable comic books top 100.
Tank Girl #1 (1991)
Origin and 1st Appearance, Tank Girl
Record sale: $1,150

The original edition of Tank Girl is a cult classic that is enjoying a rise in prices, and a higher spot. onthe most valuable comic books list.

On my must-own list for this period. Get one!
Amazing Spider-Man #700 (2013):
Steve Ditko cover variant
Record sale: $1,000
Minimum value: $30
Variant editions of Amazing Spider-Man comic books have been ballooning in recent years.

Amazing Spider-Man #361 (1992)
1st Appearance of Carnage
Record sale: $1,800
Minimum value: $70
This is the New Mutants #98 of the modern age.
It's such a common book! We get offered this multiples times PER DAY in collections.
However, it's demand that drives value.
And there is seemingly endless demand for this issue, with new record prices set all the time and a better position on this most valuable comic books list.
I predict a ceiling around the $800 level which that Deadpool issue has settled down to.
Teen Titans v3 #12
1st full appearance of Batman Who Laughs
Record sale: $720
Minimum value: $40
While the true first appearance, was in Dark Days: The Casting #1, in cameo, as part of the Dark Knights, this is the first full appearance of this hot Batman spin-off.
He looks to have a big future.
Spider-Man Noir #1
1st Appearance of Spider-Man Noir
Record Sale: $700

Which variation is going to be the next big thing? Female spider characters are hot, but nobody's overlooking other edgy versions.
Solar Man of the Atom #10 (1992)
Origin and 1st Appearance, Eternal Warrior;
Cover attributed to Barry Windsor-Smith
Record sale: $1,380
Minimum value: $10
This all-black cover is accredited to Barry Windsor-Smith, famously who pencilled the early issues of the Conan the Barbarian comic series in the 1970s.
It's notoriously tough in high grade, due to the tendency for these common books to be dropped into Dollar bins and left to rot. The cover shows fingerprints very easily too.
Note there are multiple printings of this book.
Wonder Woman v2 #72 (1993)
Classic Sexy Cover by Brian Bolland
Record sale: $700
Minimum value: $40
Bolland art is hugely popular at the moment, and this explains why a fairly common Wonder Woman comic book is so sought-after.

Issue #0 of this series was a mail-away bonus offer.
Many copies of Harbinger #1 will be missing the coupons needed to get #0. Be sure to check your copy if you're buying it.
HINT: CGC will give the book a green "Qualified" label if they are missing. A blue label means it's complete with coupons.
This book has been selling higher in the past. $600 is the new normal for 9.8.
Captain Marvel volume 7 #14
1st Kamala Kahn, Regular Edition

Likely to be higher up the most valuable comic books list next year.
Batman #608 (2002)
Rare 2nd Printing
Record sale: $5,500
Minimum value: $40
Here's a prediction for you. Second (and third, fourth, etc.) printings of DC Comics will become a really strong growth collector's market in the near future.
They have long been ignored. I like the Roman numerals on 1990s covers indicating II, III, IV, V, VI etc. Some Wonder Woman reprints of the 90s are next to impossible to find.
So far, only reprints with different covers, like this cool one, are catching people's attention.
Amazing Fantasy v2 #15
1st Amadeus Cho
Record Sale: $2,500
Minimum Value: $110
Who is Amadeus Cho, you may ask?
Deep breath: he is also known as Mastermind Excello, Prince of Power, Iron Spider, Spider-Man, The Hulk (from 2015) and Brawn.
That should keep you busy.
Walking Dead #19 (2005)
1st Appearance of Michonne
Record sale: $500
Minimum value: $120
More Walking Dead? I doubt this will be a book many people care about in ten years.
It's never had a 9.9 pop, which is surprising.
Sure to leave the most valuable comic books list within a year or two.
New Avengers #7 (2005)
1st appearance of Illuminati
Record Sale: $210
Minimum Value: $10
A completely new book to me. The Illuminati cross over into many important MCU threads, including the rumor-filled World War Hulk.
One to watch.

Carol Danvers was huge a couple of years ago.
Now, as the movie was only lukewarm, and interest in her has diminished, books like this have dropped in price.
Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3 (2020)
2nd appearance of Punchline
Record Sale: $285
Minimum Value: $60
Rachel Rising #1 (2011)
First in series; TV Show is Being Shopped Around Hollywood
Record sale: $275
Minimum value: $20
Ironically, the price of Rachel Rising is falling. No interest in the show maybe? Won't be a most valuable comic books mainstay.
Sentry #1
Origin and 1st Appearance of Bob Reynolds as Sentry
Record Sale: $690
Minimum Value: $30
There is also a variant by Jae Lee that sells for about double the regular price.
And if you think Bob Reynolds is a pretty unlikely name for a super character... Then you're not alone.
Bloodstone #1 (2001)
1st Elsa Bloodstone
Record Sale: $900
Minimum Value: $100
We don't know why Elsa Bloodstone is important, but hey, she's hot at least.
This is the sort of book you may find in dollar bins or at yard sales. It looks like nothing. I'm pretty sure we've dropped it into our OWN dollar bins in the past!
Hulk v2 #1 (2008)
1st General Thaddeus Ross
Record Sale: $1,230
Minimum Value: $20
One of many Hulk reboots over the years, and new to the most valuable comic books list.
The modern World War Hulk series takes the green guy in a new direction -- and this iteration is a red guy!
X-Men v2 #5 (1992)
1st Maverick (Christopher Nord)
Record Sale: $350

Later known as David Nord for whatever reason, Christopher, aka Maverick, is an important part of the Weapon X storyline.

Gold Edition Mail-Away Variant
Record Sale: $550
Minimum Value: $40
The second of the mail-away Pressman variants.
Uncanny X-Men #297 is FAR less obvious, which may be why it's more valuable. This one hits you over the head with the "goldness".
Very cool and a must-have for X-Men completists.
Black Panther v4 #2 (2005)
1st Shuri
Record Sale: $1,000
Minimum Value: $10
Shuri is Black Panther's sister, which makes her an important side character, at least.
In the future, she may become even more significant, given the uncertainty around the character following the sad death of actor Chadwick Boseman.
Will be higher on the most valuable comic books list next year.
Nova v4 #8 (2008)
1st Luminals, Knowhere, Cosmo the Space Dog
Record Sale: $290

Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #1
1st Appearance of Spider-Man (Ultimate)
Record Sale: $550
Minimum Value: $30
The Spidey Ultimate version launched with this issue.
There is a white variant of this comic book. It's so hard to keep up with variants that I'll try to include it in a future update.
Free Comic Book Day 2007: Spider-Man
1st Mister Negative, 1st Jackpot
Record Sale: $220
Minimum Value: $20
Two first appearances for the price of one. And that original price was ZERO!
Not enough Free Comic Book Day issues appear on the most valuable comic books list. Surely that will change in time.
Preacher #1 (1995)
1st Jesse Custer, Tulip, Cassidy and Saint of Killers
Record sale: $600
Minimum value: $30
At one point, this was one of the most valuable comic books of the modern age.
Not anymore. It's fallen like a stone, due to the lack of concrete progress in Preacher becoming a mainstream TV character.
Runaways #1 (2003)
Origin and 1st Appearance. TV Series Commissioned by Hulu
Record sale: $260
Minimum value: $30
Another former darling of the TV show speculator crowd rose high on the most valuable comic books list, but now fallen from its dizzy heights and probably destined for obscurity.
Scalped #1 (2007)
TV Pilot Being Produced
Record sale: $300
Minimum value: $30
When the Walking Dead was a huge deal, suddenly Hollywood wanted to know what ELSE might be worth making into a series.
Scalped was one of the books linked strongly to a show. Unfortunately, nothing much seems to have happened lately, and the book has dropped on the most valuable comic books top 100.
Wolverine Origins #10
1st Daken (Kid Wolverine)
Record Sale: $1,490

Daken is surely going to be a fixture of the MCU in future years.
Batman Adventures v2 #16 (2004)

Perhaps some weird sequel to the movie Joker?
Green Lantern v4 #25 (2008)
1st Larfleeze (Agent Orange)
Record Sale: $270
Minimum Value: $30
Agent Orange has shown some longevity, appearing in various of the DC reboots and story arcs. It's worth tracking down his first appearance on the most valuable comic books list.
X-Men v2 #205
1st Hope Summers
Record Sale: $290
Minimum Value: $20
Hope Summers is vital to many of the more recent X-Men storylines, including Hope Complex and Fear Itself.
One to watch. Has previously been more valuable. Several variants exist.
100 Bullets #1 (1999)
1st Issue of Series
Record sale: $180
