There's no doubt that Marvel Comics characters are the world's most popular.
Here are the top Marvel Comic superheroes, and the comics you should watch for.
Here are links to each Marvel price guide we've published. These take you to a new page on our site, with a detailed breakdown of values.

Leading the pack of Marvel superheroes is Spider-Man. With the original Amazing Spider-Man comic series being the world's most popular single title, comic book collecting would not be the same without Spidey.
This phenomenon has led to the introduction of numerous spin-off series. None are as appealing as the original, but the relative affordability of Spectacular Spider-Man has seen prices increase in recent years.
If you've dug out your old comic books and found a run of early Spider-Man comics, then you are in good shape. Send us details for a free valuation.

We break them down issue by issue below:
While Fantastic Four #1 launched the 'Marvel Age of Comics', it's the X-Men who have ingrained themselves in the collective consciousness.
This is in part due to the fact that (broadly speaking) the FF movies were pretty poorly received, while the X-Men movies were much more popular. But to us, the roots go deeper.
The X-Men is a way more varied comic book series. The characters seem more real and human, as well as inhuman/mutant, and as characters have come and gone, the series has evolved more than FF.
Fantastic Four, of all the Marvel Comics characters, seldom appear in other comic book series, while X-Men cross over all the time.
A mint copy of X-Men #1 broke all records in summer 2012, and values are strong for the Silver Age and other key issues.
You should have us appraise your X-Men comics if you have lots of older ones in your comic book collection.
We have published a full article on X-Men comics values here.

You could make a case for putting The Avengers Comics (click for full article) at #3, because there are so many different characters represented and so many collectors love the series.
But, as most of them will appear separately in the top 10 anyway, it makes sense to put Iron Man here.
The movies, starring Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark, have done wonders for the resale value of old Iron Man comics. There are plenty of appearances, the most famous being Tales of Suspense #39.
Iron Man's famous red and gold armor was first seen in Tales of Suspense #48. By then, he had been in silver armor (ToS #39) and golden armor (Tales of Suspense #40).
#48 is going to achieve "key" status, as the red and gold look is the way he's known in the movies.
Other key books include Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1, and the stand-alone series, Iron Man #1. There are also Avengers appearances worth finding.

Another of the Marvel Comics characters which has benefited from the Marvel superhero movie effect, the Cap' has been catapulted to the front of many collectors' minds.
Although a lot of younger comic book collectors only know the Silver Age to modern Captain America, this Marvel Comics character's roots go much further back.
In addition to plenty of very collectible comics from the 1960s, you should also be on the lookout for the original, Golden Age (10c cover price) Captain America Comic books. (Click for article.)

Since his exposure to gamma radiation, the Incredible Hulk has been a "smash" with collectors!
The very early issues are prone to the dreaded Marvel chipping, and are among the most difficult Marvel comics to find in great shape.
First appearance was Incredible Hulk #1 through #6. In #1, Hulk had gray skin, but #2 saw his first green skin comic appearance. He's been green more or less ever since.
Hulk is very popular with collectors of other series, and he often appears in crossover titles, fighting with other Marvel Comics characters like the Thing and Spider-Man.

It's not easy being a demi-god! Thor brought the pantheon of ancient Norse gods to the Marvel comics character universe.
The likes of Odin and Loki make appearances throughout the series.
While you may find his attitude a little arrogant, there's no doubting that Thor is a mighty Marvel Comics character, and a great addition to The Avengers team.
The first and second appearances of this character in Journey into Mystery #83 and #84 are sky-high right now, so if you have either of those comics, get in touch immediately!

Once the most popular comic book series, the original Marvel Comics characters team-up of the Human Torch, Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Girl and the Thing have slipped down in popularity in the last decade or so.
See our full article on The Fantastic Four comic books.
This is in part due to their movies not being well-received, and in part due to the fact that the Fantastic Four almost never cross over into other comic books as a team.
That doesn't mean the early issues are not collected. Far from it. Just that a run of FF comics would be more affordable to put together now.
First appearance of Fantastic Four #1, and the first Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four #5, are among the key issues.

First appearing in Fantastic Four #48, #49 and #50 (#50 being the first full Silver Surfer cover -- see image above), this otherwordly surfer is a very popular character that has been long tipped for big movie roles.
The bad news is that this incredible character is really one of the most under-used Marvel Comics characters.
He had one series, and a handful of crossover appearances, only.
The good news is, if you have Silver Surfer comics in your collection, that the values of classic issues have spiked up in recent years.

If you have a good condition, early run of Daredevil comics, then you have a nice little asset.
The blind superhero starred in a poorly-rated superhero movie a few years back, but this is still one of the most collected series of Marvel Comics characters.
Origin and first appearance in Daredevil #1, plus plenty of crossovers and cameo appearances in popular series like Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and the Avengers.
