Key Investment Comic Books for the Marvel Comics Eternals Movie
by Norm Robinson
Marvel fans will enjoy the 2020 holiday season when the new MCU superhero team The Eternals premieres. Disney has given the go ahead to unleash a Kirby classic in November 2020.
Jack Kirby created the concept of the Eternals in 1976. After a falling out with management at DC Comics; he returned to Marvel.
When he left DC the project New Gods was unfinished. He rechristened his New Gods creation at Marvel: Eternals. Kirby’s Eternals were thematically similar to his creation New Gods. He did all the work on the Eternals comics series: co-editor, script writer and artist.
The Eternals story has many key appearances spread across the first eighteen books. I have chosen the top six keys to review along with two tie in comics.
If Marvel can do the Eternals justice by creating a stellar movie; then these books could be worth a great deal more in the not so distant future. This is good news for investors who work the “buy and hold” angle to alternative investments.
The Eternals speculation environment continues to expand. Each spoiler alert and media drop has speculators diving in to the next hot comic book.
The Eternals #1
Record Sale: $1,700
Minimum Value: $10
WHAT TO BUY: CGC 9.8
Eternals #1 CGC 9.8 Average Price Trend:
The Eternals #1 is hot now. I recommend buying CGC 9.8, which has seen a return of over 25 percent from the last 324 sales.
My runner up is CGC 4.0, which has returned 138 percent over four sales. High or low grades of this book will sell.
Note that low-grade Bronze Age comics are not usually a good investment book to hold, as too many exist. You are usually better off with high-grade copies to hold and flip your lower-grade ones.
If you come across any copies at a discount, pick them up you can probably flip them. Once we get closer to the movie debut they should increase in value again.
Eternals #2
1st Celestials; 1st Ajak
Record Sale: $1,100
Minimum Value: $5
WHAT TO BUY: CGC 9.8
Eternals #2 CGC 9.8 Average Price Trend:
The Celestials are uber-gods at Marvel. They are ultimately powerful beings who sit in judgement upon Deviants, and Eternals with humanity caught in the middle.
The first appearance of Celestials is Eternals #2. This book is a good long-term hold because the Celestials make great villains. They show up throughout Marvel across many different comic books. Therefore, if Marvel can sell it; then Celestials can be a constant antagonist for whatever superhero group runs into them.
I recommend buying only the high-end 9.8 grade for this comic book. It has returned more than 20 percent over the past 75 sales.
Don’t be afraid to “buy and hold” this book. The Celestials will probably show up in other upcoming Marvel movies.
Both Eternals #1 and #2 exist in 30 cent price variants.
Eternals #3
Record Sale: $975
Minimum Value: $5
WHAT TO BUY: CGC 9.6
Eternals #3 CGC 9.6 Average Price Trend:
This book is the first appearance of perhaps the most interesting of the Marvel Comics Eternals: Sersi. Sersi is the love interest of Dane Whitman (the Black Knight). This will probably be an important part of the Eternals movie.
Big money was paid for the actor playing Black Knight (Kit Harrington of Game of Thrones fame), while Sersi will be played by the delectable Gemma Chan of from the TV series Humans. These two of Hollywood’s hottest will romantically sizzle on screen. Their love story alone will be worth the price of admission.
My recommendation is to buy and hold this book close to premiere date. The trend on this comic book is not good.
A CGC 9.8 has dropped more than 25 percent -- probably due to this being a fairly common book and dealers pushing more on to the market.
High- or low-grade, this book has had drastic pull back since the news of an Eternals movie at Comic Con. If I had to choose an entry point, I recommend buying at grade 9.6 for just under $100. You can own a near mint copy and the risk is minimal.
Avengers #47
Record Sale: $3,100
Minimum Value: $25
WHAT TO BUY: CGC 9.4
Avengers #47 CGC 9.4 Average Price Trend:
The Marvel character Dane Whitman becomes the third iteration of Black Knight in the following issue. Whitman first appears in Avengers #47.
This character will be appearing in the Eternals movie played by Kit Harrington. He will be Sersi's companion and potential love interest.
This comic book is the pick of the bunch for the Eternals movie. Avengers #47 continues to increase in value.
My recommendation is to buy this big book, or if you can afford the higher price, Avengers #48. Kit Harrington could revisit this character for multiple performances, if the MCU continues to expand on the role. That might drive this comic book price into the clouds.
Currently, I like CGC 9.4 (last sale $794 in November 2019). This grade has increased over 350 percent in the past 49 sales.
This book can be hard to find in high grade, as the yellow usually fades on the cover.
Avengers #48
Record Sale: $7,200
Minimum Value: $50
WHAT TO BUY: CGC 9.0
Avengers #48 CGC 9.0 Average Price Trend:
The Black Knight is a superhero from the comic book Avengers #48. This Arthurian Legend wields the Ebony Blade and the Shield of Night, which can absorb energy.
This is the first full appearance of Dane Whitman as the Black Knight III and his origin story. This character will somehow appear in the Marvel Comics Eternals movie. Hopefully it won’t be on the back of a winged horse, which just about ruins every movie ever made.
My recommendation is to purchase a copy while you still can. There is a great deal of time before this movie hits.
The long-term return is stellar throughout all grades for this comic book. A good entry point grade is CGC 9.0 (last sale $716 in December 2019).
This particular grade has returned 167 percent over 34 sales. That is a nice return for a speculative "new" Silver Age key issue comic book.
Eternals #13
Record Sale: $620
Minimum Value: $5
WHAT TO BUY: CGC 9.6
Eternals #13 CGC 9.6 Average Price Trend:
Gilgamesh was a mythical hero in ancient Sumerian culture. Jack Kirby uses this ancient hero as the basis for his Eternals Gilgamesh character.
Gilgamesh first appears in Eternals #13 has sold as high as $3,000 in 9.8 grade. But prices are falling as more copies come to market.
My recommendation is to buy Eternals #13 in grade 9.6. It is a lower entry point, so less risky, and still likely to be a solid return on your investment.
Eternals #11
Record Sale: $500
Minimum Value: $5
WHAT TO BUY: CGC 9.8
Eternals #11 CGC 9.8 Average Price Trend:
Marvel Comics Eternals #11 is replete with key appearances.
This book has it all: Russians on a rampage, the nuking of Ikaris (Eternals leader), and three villain first appearances. Scripted and written by Jack Kirby in April 30, 1977. This issue has an especially eclectic cover worth the price of admission.
The three main villains are: Kingo, Valkin and Agonar. They all seem to have awful supervillain names. It reminds me of Master of the Universe classics like Spikor, or Clawful.
Will these three villains be in the next movie? We know a lot about the Eternals but not that casting choice. However, the book is popular and definitely one of the sought after Eternals keys.
My recommendation is to buy grade 9.8 for the Eternals #11. The numbers speak for themselves with grade 9.8 having a last sale of $350 in November 2019.
It has returned over 90 percent long-term across 28 sales; this book is a solid bet. Don't drop below CGC 9.8.
Eternals #9
Record Sale: $270
Minimum Value: $5
WHAT TO BUY: CGC 9.8
Eternals #9 CGC 9.8 Average Price Trend:
Eternals #9 is the first appearance of the Eternal Sprite. This girl is the superhero equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife for the Eternals.
Sprite has as many powers as all the Avengers combined. She has the ability to manipulate cosmic energy, create energy blasts, invulnerability, and even sustain immortality. Sprite also possesses psionic abilities of telepathy, telekinesis, matter transmutation and illusion casting.
She appears as a young girl; but is actually one of the older Eternals. She is also one of the most powerful.
Marvel Comics Eternals #9 could become a bigger book if Sprite catches on with audiences.
The long-term returns have been solid and consistent. I recommend buying Eternals #9 at grade 9.8 sold for $289 last sale. The book has returned over 50 percent long-term in this grade.
The movie is going to have multiple first appearances across many Marvel Comics Eternals books. The Eternals movie is currently scheduled for release on November 6th, 2020.
It is directed by Chloe Zhao with screenplay by Mathew Firpo. Zhao has about two movies under her belt, and it looks like they were both independent films. We can extrapolate the cinematography will be exquisite and the directed stories of those two will probably be awful.
To match that lack of directorial experience is a new writer. Mathew Firpo has actually had more time directing than writing. Though to be fair he has done several online commercials. They have been credible and even managed to grab Super bowl time slots.
So to sum up, we have a director with experience making small films and a writer that has more experience directing than writing. Oh boy.
Yep, Marvel will let these two relative unknown creators have control over a billion dollar revenue stream in the MCU. This movie will most likely be “Eternally awful.”
This is not about the team being young; that has no relevance. It is about not having experience running a major motion picture or writing multiple scripts.
However, that doesn’t mean it won’t make money. And you never know, they might surprise us.
All this to say: Don't hold your Eternals keys after the movie comes out. You don't want to be the one selling pumpkins in November.
