We provide record sales in 9.8 grade, and minimum values of an ungraded copy, as well as very recent 9.8 sales if they should so happen to be notably less than the record sale.
In cases where the very recent sale was markedly less than the record sale, the book was ranked based on the more recent sale, for the purposes of making the list as current and reflective of the present market as possible.
Sales of signed/remarked/sketched books were not included on this list, as such additions can and do further affect the value of the book beyond the assigned grade.
Furthermore, error/recalled books are also not included, as those were not intended to be “variants” by the publisher.
We published it in reverse order, to make the countdown more suspenseful!
If you have any of the books listed here, then please get in touch using the button below.
#50: Captain America 7 Perkins Venom Variant (2012)
Record sale: 9.8 $700
Minimum value raw: $375
If you put together a full set of these back when they first came out you were either brilliant, a huge Venom collector, and/or very lucky.
This one, by Mike Perkins, features a charging, slobbering "Venomized" Captain America and is disturbingly reminiscent of the cover of Avengers 4 (1964).
#49: Incredible Hulk 4 Del Mundo Venom Variant (2012)
Record sale: 9.8 $785
Minimum value raw: $400
In case you haven’t noticed a trend here, it’s that the early, original set of "Venomized" variants are incredibly pricey, rare, and highly desired by collectors.
I'm not really sure what could possibly be more horrific than a Venomized Hulk, but if you ever wondered what something like that might look like, here you go, courtesy of Mike Del Mundo.
#48: Adventure Comics 515 (12) Bermejo Variant (2010)
Record sale: 9.6 $405
Minimum value raw: $200
A great Darkseid cover by Lee Bermejo that is genuinely tough to find is what has put this book on many variant chasers' radars.
#47: Incredible Hulk 377 Third Printing, McKeown/McLeod (1994)
Record sale: 9.8 $2,000
Minimum value raw: $100
Also technically not a 'variant' of the first printing, it nonetheless has a lighter shade of green than the first printing in the background of our always angry hero on the front cover.
This tough to find book in high grade has only continued to get more and more expensive over time. Good luck locating a CGC 9.8.
#46: Rick and Morty 1 Roiland Variant (2015)
Record sale: 9.8 $2,500
Minimum value raw: $400
Making a comic book out of a popular cult cartoon is a definite no-brainer, and the series of comics are currently in demand.
Unfortunately, much of the property, including this variant by Justin Roiland, is beset with and excessive amounts of questionable sales that make the current real values difficult to pinpoint.
However there is clearly a demand, and we will continue to follow this book and hope for a better handle on values once the dust settles a bit.
#45: Wonder Woman 38 Finch Variant (2015)
Record sale: 9.8 $800
Minimum value raw: $350
A great cover by David Finch, elegant and powerful, much like our girl power hero portrayed on this highly sought after 1 for 50 retailer incentive cover.
#44: Captain Marvel 17 Second Printing, Alphona (2014)
Record Sale: 9.8 $5,700
Minimum value raw: $300
Our first look at the new Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan by Adrian Alphona, in costume, with her powers on full display is what has everybody chasing this hard to find modern key.
#43: Journey into Mystery 633 Hans Venom Variant (2012)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,045
Minimum value raw: $375
Here is the other "Venomized" variant with the likely lowest distribution.
Journey into Mystery was a dying title at this time, and would be canceled altogether shortly after this book was released.
Nonetheless, this image of a Venomized Loki by the under-rated Stephanie Hans, holding a severed leg and what looks like a dead body in a shallow pond might be the creepiest (and one of the best) Venomized cover to date.
#42: Amazing Spider-man 648 (Color) Campbell Variant (2011)
Record sale: 9.6 $875
Minimum value raw: $400
A tough-to-find J. Scott Campbell cover in the Amazing Spider-Man run will almost always equate to high demand and high prices.
#41: Venomverse 1 Remastered Sketch Edition, McFarlane (2017)
Record sale: 9.8 $850
Minimum value raw: $400
A crazy 1 for 2000 ordering ratio made this expensive right out of the gate, and nearly impossible to find ever since.
#40: Superior Spider-man 20 Campbell Variant (2013)
Record sale: 9.8 $900
Minimum value raw: $350
Speaking of pin-up artists, here is J. Scott Campbell going back to his favorite muse the Black Cat again, in a salacious pose involving Spider-man’s head as a ball of yarn between Black Cat’s legs that I frankly am surprised made it past the censors.
But thank god it did. Maybe that’s why it sells for what it does.
#39: Supergirl and the Legion of Super-heroes 23 Hughes Variant (2006)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,090
Recent sale 9.8: $655, 3/21
Minimum value raw: $350
A very early 1 for 10 ordering incentive by the popular Adam Hughes, this pitch perfect rendering of Supergirl riding a meteor in space perfectly exemplifies the artist’s pin-up style.
#38: Uncanny X-men 297 Gold Edition (Pressman Variant), Peterson/Panosian (1993)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,025
Minimum value raw: $100
If you bought a Pressman X-Men board game in early 1993 and sent off the voucher, you would have gotten a now hard-to-find copy of this book.
#37: Superman/Batman 7 Dell'otto French Variant (2008)
Record sale: 9.9 $1,850
Minimum value raw: $250
This now classic image depicting a furious and fed-up Batman roughing up a typically lunatic Joker in a shallow body of water is a brilliant piece by the infinitely talented Gabreile Dell'otto.
Be careful to look for the more popular and valuable "virgin" version of this cover.
#36: Sex Criminals 6 Brimception Variant (2014)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,500
Minimum value raw: $250
This book, said to have only 100 copies printed, is also hard to place due to only a couple of graded sales, and only one first to market 9.8 sale.
But there does seem to be demand for this hard-to-find book with a photo cover. Will keep an eye on this one to see if it should go higher or lower in future updates.
#35: Venom 6 McFarlane Variant (2017)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,125
Minimum value raw: $500
Another new book from 2017, features the long awaited return of the symbiote to Eddie Brock, and another remastered image from a prior interior panel by the ToddFather.
#34: All New Wolverine 19 Mattina Sketch (2017)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,675
Recent sale: 9.8 $640, 4/21
Minimum value raw: $700
This nearly flawlessly executed 1 for 500 "Venomized" cover by the rapidly rising Francesco Mattina depicts X-23 in the midst of possession by the symbiote.
This and the Journey into Mystery 633 Hans Venom Variant (also on this list) are by far the most rare "Venomized" covers produced to date, and not surprisingly, make the list.
#33: Incredible Hulks 635 Granov Variant (2011)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,695
Recent sale: 9.8 $630 10/19
Minimum value raw: $300
A classic Hulk pose highlights this tough to find cover by the highly talented Adi Granov.
#32: Spawn 1 Black and White Reprint Edition, McFarlane (1997)
Record sale: 9.9 $6,750
Minimum value raw: $300
Image commemorated the five year anniversary of Spawn by releasing this limited reprint with a new cover by the living legend himself, Todd McFarlane.
See our Spawn Comics price guide here.
#31: Wolverine 310 Platt (Color) Variant (2012)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,260
Minimum raw value: $400
Another apparently rare variant that few retailers appeared to have ordered when it first came out. Now it seems everyone wants it, and drive up the price whenever one shows up for sale.
#30: Invincible Iron Man 512 Stroman Venom Variant (2012)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,995
Recent sale: 9.8 $1,600 3/21
Minimum value raw: $350
The third "Venomized" cover to make the cut, this one a slightly insane yet eye-popping concept of Tony Stark if he got possessed by the symbiote while still wearing his armor!
#29: Amazing Spider-man 688 Campbell Variant (2012)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,460
Minimum value raw: $450
Once again showing his versatility, J. Scott Campbell clocks in with yet another awesome cover here. This time showcasing a menacing Lizard, in one of Campbell’s best and most overall detailed pieces to date.
#28: Amazing Spider-man Presents: Black Cat 1 Campbell Variant (2010)
Record sale: 9.8 $1,425
Recent sale: 9.8 $1,000, 4/21
Minimum value raw: $350
One of J. Scott Campbell’s favorite and most often depicted muses, Black Cat, strikes a clever pin-up style pose that only Campbell could make this memorable.
#27: Spawn 189 McFarlane Sketch (2009)
Record sale: 9.8 $3,910
Minimum value raw: $300
Another great and rare Spawn cover by Todd McFarlane, this one flew under the radar of a lot of people for a long time. Not anymore.
#26: Marvel Collectible Classics: Spider-man 1 (ASM 300 "Chromium"), McFarlane (1998)
Record sale: 9.9 $5,500
Minimum value raw: $500
Much like the Saga 1 DRS also on this list, this is technically a reprint with a new cover and not a "variant" of the original printing of Amazing Spider-Man #300.
Nonetheless, much like the Saga 1 DRS, that hasn’t stopped this from being an extremely coveted and valuable, at certain times selling for more than the original first printing (also, much like the Saga 1 DRS).
