What If was a monthly comic book anthology published by Marvel Comics, which explored storylines of alternate possibilities during key moments in the Marvel Universe.
The series changed the realities of the mainstream narrative of continuity that readers were used to, and offered many crossover stories, many characters teaming up and fighting from different stand-alone series.
The first series was launched in 1977 and ran for 47 issues before ending its run in 1984. Volume two ran from 1989 to 1998 (price guide here).
The original series was narrated by Uatu, an alien who observes the earth from his base on the Moon. Uatu typically opens the issues by describing an event from the mainstream Marvel Universe that actually happened, before departing from said narrative to offer alternative events and the consequences that stem from such events.
The series also contained humorous elements laced within the storylines. The Watcher also served as the series narrator for selected issues. The inaugural issue is entitled: "What If Spider-Man had Joined the Fantastic Four?", which set the tone for the types of alternate storylines that readers could expect in the future.
Issues #23-#31 offered a second mini-story at the end of the first entitled, "Untold Tales of the Marvel Universe." Running as a miniseries in the back section of those six issues, the stories took place in the regular Marvel timeline on Earth-616 and were narrated by the Watcher. The origin story of the Inhumans is revealed and the creation of the Kree race.
Volume two is handled in a different price guide here.
