Find out what are your X-Men comics are worth
Where did the mutant team begin?
Way back in 1963, building on the successes of the Fantastic Four.
Since the first of the X-Men movies appeared 20 years ago, interest in the mutant super-team has grown exponentially.
September 1963 saw their origin and first appearance in X-Men #1. A world record was set for a copy of this comic book in 2012!
Values of early issues have stayed strong, and collectors seeking to build a high-grade run have seen this task become ever more challenging.

1st Appearance of the Super-Team
Record sale: $492,000
Minimum value: $1,000
There are plenty of copies of X-Men #1 available on the market. It is far from a rare comic book.
There are now TWO CGC 9.8s and FOUR CGC 9.6s in the census.
But meanwhile, back in the real world, in any condition, X-Men #1's value has rocketed.
It's hard to keep up with the progress in sales, but here are most recent sales by grade:

X-Men #2
1st Appearance of the Vanisher
Record sale: $46,000
Minimum value: $50
X-Men #2 saw a new villain appear, The Vanisher. Apart from that, it's always nice to have the early issues of any series.
You will not struggle to find a new owner for your copy, especially if it's in fine or better condition.
X-Men #3
1st Appearance of the Blob
Record sale: $75,000
Minimum value: $50
Another difficult issue to find in fine shape because of its all-white cover.
X-Men #3 saw another new villain appear, The Blob. It's worth dramatically less than #1 or #2.
Still, it's a nice find it you happen to have one in top shape.
1st Appearance of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants,
Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch
Record sale: $26,000
Minimum value: $100
X-Men #4 sees the second appearance of the dreaded Magneto, and the first appearance of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
More importantly, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch appear here for the first time. They would go on to play major roles in the Marvel universe.
Record sale: $12,400
Minimum value: $20
It's pretty rare to find any early X-Men comics in really high grade, but #5, with its dark blue cover, shows damage a lot more than most.
X-Men #5 may not be a stand-out in the history of the super-team, but it's worth decent money, especially if you find one in 9.0 shape or better.
There are later comics from the X-Men that are more collectible than the following, but while we're covering the earlier issues, it makes sense to list them all here.
Below the cover photos is the record selling price to date.

In common with most vintage comic book series, after #20 the value of Silver Age Uncanny X-Men comics falls off sharply.
Anything in top comic grades is worth serious money: certainly hundreds, and occasionally a few thousand dollars.
However, there are plenty of later X-Men comics that are worth much more than average.

1st Banshee
Record sale: $4,700
Minimum value: $30
X-Men #35
Amazing Spider-Man Crossover Story

Most later X-Men issues are fairly run-of-the-mill, but X-Men #35 is worth mentioning.
Amazing Spider-Man comics are the most collected in the world.
Anytime he appears in another popular series as a crossover, especially on the cover, it boosts the value of that edition.

Despite the faith of Stan Lee in the mutant series, Marvel Comics insisted on stopping new story content on the title.
Lee fought for the X-Men, and found a compromise. It would continue to be published, but reprinting earlier stories with slightly revised cover art.
These reprints have been desperately unpopular ever since, and spent a lot of time in dollar bins. Consequently, putting together a run of them in top grades has become very tough.
Prices are actually very buoyant in CGC 9.6 and CGC 9.8.

Incredible Hulk #181 is a milestone comic.
Although it's not an actual X-Men comic, the first appearance of the hugely important character, Wolverine, has to be mentioned here.
He later joined the X-Men, first in Giant-Size X-Men #1, and then in X-Men #94. See below for prices on those two important bronze age comics.
Giant-Size X-Men #1
1st Appearance of the New Team with Wolverine
Record sale: $15,000
Minimum value: $150
This is a hugely important comic book!
In the summer of 1975, Marvel Comics relaunched the X-Men in a comic that would become one of the most collectible comics ever published after 1970.
Giant-Size X-Men #1 introduced Colossus, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird, Storm and Banshee to the X-Men.
After a successful debut in Incredible Hulk #181 (see above), Wolverine also joined the team.
GSX #1 is partially responsible for the resurgence in interest in X-Men comic books, and the series restarted new stories with #94.
It's also one of the most valuable comic books of the 1970s (Bronze Age).
For completeness, we included Giant-Size X-Men #2 here as well:
Record Sale: $2,000

Uncanny X-Men #94
1st new team in main title; Reprints end, new stories begin
Record sale: $14,600

After years of relative decline in their popularity, the X-Men team was relaunched with an all-new lineup in X-Men #94.
August 1975 saw Colossus, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird, Storm, Wolverine and Banshee join the X-Men, while Angel, Marvel Girl and Iceman left the team.

Uncanny X-Men #101
1st Appearance of Phoenix
Record sale: $3,400
Minimum value: $50
Has sold for higher prices, but since the movie excitement died down, has been steadily falling.
Support for prices on this book is established, as it's definitely a very collectible key issue.
The classic run by Claremont and Byrne is among the most collected in all X-Men comic books.
Their collaboration began on X-Men #108, and ended with issue #143.
However, there are two key issues which are under-reported among X-Men fans.
FOOM #10
1st Byrne X-Men art
Record Sale: $5,400

The next issue, which still pre-dates X-Men #108, is incorrectly considered to be Byrne's first stab at X-Men comics art.

Overstreet lists them together (which makes sense to me!), while some online search tools like GP Analysis list them as separate titles.
I've limited the later books to key appearances only.

Three comic books with low regular values were reprinted as Gold Editions, by Pressman under licence from Marvel.
People who bought board games could send in coupons to receive these editions.
They are not glittery covers like some 1990s 'special' books were. Instead, the colors are changed, sometimes very subtly, others quite obviously.
They are pretty easy to tell when you see them next to the originals, but could be overlooked if you have never seen one before.
Uncanny X-Men #297 Gold Edition

Surprisingly (or not!) the original is worth more.
Like most Marvel Comics superheroes, the X-Men published annual editions to cash in on the collector's Christmas or summer markets.
They are scarce to rare in really high grade. The record sales here reflect that rarity; average copies are worth far, far less.
