Young Avengers are a Marvel superhero team created by Allen Heinberg and Jim Cheung which began in 2006.
(Marvel’s predecessor, Timely Comics, initially featured a character called Young Avenger in 1941, appearing in the first issue of USA Comics; however he is not connected to the later series.)
The characters are often made up of the adolescent versions of those who would later be the Avengers. The first run of the series lasted for 12 issues, before being relaunched for a second run in 2013.
The characters have also made appearances in other popular Marvel series such as Civil War, Siege, Dark Reign and The Children’s Crusade.
The 2006 series won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book as well as the Harvey Award for Best New Series. Kieron Gillen would go on to win the same GLAAD Award for his reboot of the series in 2014.
The story of the Young Avengers begins when Nathaniel Richards, a young man who is dressed in armour arrives at the Avengers Mansion. He had recently fled from the future, escaping Kang the Conqueror, his future self. Finding the house abandoned he travels to Stark Industries where he gains access to A.I. of Vision and upgrades his armour.
The A.I. reveals to him that there is a program called the Avengers Fail-Safe program in place so that they may recruit young heroes who are connected to the Avengers.
Richards then forms a team with Eli Bradley, Billy Kaplan and Teddy Altman, who are nicknamed Iron Lad, Lieutenant America, Teen-Hulk and Thor Jr.
The team takes on every mission available to them and after saving many people from a fire, they gain the attention of Captain America and Iron Man.
